Letters

During World War One, many members of the Albert Park and South Melbourne Rowing Clubs who enlisted wrote letters home.

Stan Stewart, the then secretary of the Albert Park club, was a writer for The Herald and published many of these letters in The Winner, a war-time newspaper which was available for the enlistees to read in Europe.

The men wrote about the sights they saw, fellow club members they met, their experiences, and how much they missed rowing.

Many of these newspapers are now available through Trove, courtesy of the National Library of Australia.

The letters they contain featured in a number of exhibitions on display at APSM commemorating the centenary of World War One.  One of these exhibitions, Accounts from the Front, 1917 was supported by the City of Port Phillip through the Cultural Development Fund, and the Victorian Veterans' Council.
